At the Foundation's May 2017 meeting, the Board of Directors approved $940,000 in funding for support of our Lifelong Learning focus. Six new grants were approved at $440,000, including a $150,000 investment in PREP-KC to further their goals of children reading on grade level by third grade and achieving high academic standards. Since laying the groundwork for a child's success in school is an important benchmark for the community, the Foundation continues to support efforts to improve the quality of teaching in both early learning centers and grades K-3 throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area.
The Foundation also continued its commitment to the Early Education Funders Collaborative with the second payment of its three-year, $1.5M grant to the Early Education Grant Fund. In 2016, the Foundation became one of 10 philanthropic organizations in the Collaborative, funding both providers of and those who support early education. In keeping with our focus to affect policy through advocacy, three of this year's Lifelong Learning grantees - the Alliance for Childhood Education, Kansas Action for Children and the Missouri Budget Project - were awarded grants in support of their advocacy efforts.
